Our cows stay in the wood downhill from the Locanda during summer, when you lay on the hammmok near the house you can meet them when they come up to drink water.

Even these lovely photos. can’t do justice to this magical place. We were there this autumn, when the countryside was a patchwork of sumptuously rich colours. Over every little hill there is another tiny, fascinating town or enticing landscape to explore. I had serious doubts about staying on a farm but I needn’t have worried – no mud, smell or flies – just cattle and horses, well fed and cared for and glowing with health (as were we, after a few days of Julia and her mother’s delicious home produce).
We’re going to have to find a way to go back, to see the spring flowers and meet the charming Savini family again.
